Dating Apps Removed By Apple And Google After FTC Warns On Use By Underage Kids

Image
Three dating apps have been removed from Apple and Google stores following a warning from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission that the apps "allow adults to find and communicate with children." The removals came at the weekend, after the FTC had sent a stern warning to Wildec, the Ukraine-based developer of FastMeet, Meet24 and Meet4U, telling them that "despite a statement in each app's Privacy Policy that users under 13 years of age are not allowed to use the apps, users who indicate they are under 13 are not prevented from accessing and using the apps or being visible to other users." The apps store users' ages and even enable real-time location data, and so "sexual predators can search by age and location to identify children nearby." The FTC tested one of the apps and found that "FTC staff was able to search for other users by age and location to find users near our location who indicated that they were as young as 12 years old."

Facebook Sues New Zealand Firm For Selling Fake Likes On Instagram

Image
F acebook has filed a lawsuit in the US against a New Zealand-based company and three individuals that it says have been selling 'fake likes' on Instagram. Through websites such as SocialEnvy.co, IGFamous.net and Likesocial.co, says Facebook, Social Media Series Limited and its directors made more than $9.4 million by selling fake engagement to Instagram users. The three directors of the company have been named locally as Arend Alexander Hubert Nollen, Leon Francis Hedges and David James Pekka Pasanen. Facebook says it sent cease-and-desist letters to two of the company's directors in July and December last year. "We previously suspended accounts associated with the defendants and formally warned them in writing that they were in violation of our Terms of Use, however their activity persisted," says Jessica Romero, Facebook's director of platform enforcement and litigation. Laptops with Intel's 10nm Ice Lake Chips are Expected to Arrive In Stores For 2019 Holiday Shoppers

Image
I ntel's consternation with its 10nm manufacturing process is well documented but on its Q1 earnings call yesterday, the Santa Clara chip giant painted a more positive picture on the ramp-up of its forthcoming Ice Lake processor for mobile client systems, dubbed Ice Lake-U. While many media outlets have been reporting that Intel's 10nm product wouldn't ship in meaningful volume this year, Intel CEO Bob Swan offered commentary that production output of Ice Lake has nearly doubled in the past few months. Swan noted specifically, “on the process technology front, our teams executed well in Q1 and our velocity is increasing. We remain on track to have volume client systems on shelves for the holiday selling season. And over the past 4 months, the organization drove a nearly 2X improvement in the rate at which 10nm products move through our factories.” Beyond this, I would offer that Intel is in the process of qualifying the product with major system OEMs here in Q2, with pr

Facebook has much to cheer about. As has become increasingly clear, the public no longer seems to care about their digital privacy or security

Image
T his week was both fantastic and terrible for Facebook. Its latest earnings report shows the company has become an unstoppable force whose user growth and profits are immune to its never-ending parade of privacy and security breaches. Even the FCC appears willing to back down from its confrontation with the company and slap it with a fine that amounts to just a tiny fraction of its quarterly profit, making even legal violations nothing more than the cost of doing business. At the same time, Facebook confronts newly emboldened regulators around the world all clamoring for their own chance to bring the world’s most powerful gatekeeper to heel. The only problem is that Facebook may already be unstoppable. Facebook has much to cheer about. As has become increasingly clear, the public no longer seems to care about their digital privacy or security. Despite breach after breach after breach after breach, users aren’t leaving and aren’t demanding any changes to the company’s business

Android Applications which will Help You in Organizing Your Life

Image
Contributing Editor  JR Raphael  at   Computerworld magazine picked essential organizing apps in android. His list consists of 8 apps: Trello - Organize your projects. The app breaks your business down into a series of boards. Within each board, you create a series of lists. And within each list, you add any number of cards — individual items that contain text, photos, files, and so on. You can label and color-code cards and assign due dates, and you (and anyone else you invite) can comment on cards to add in thoughts and updates. Any.Do - Organize your to-do lists. Any.do's main screen automatically separates your tasks into four default sections: "Today," "Tomorrow," "Upcoming," and "Someday" (though you also have the ability to create your own custom categories). You can drag and drop tasks between the lists and attach notes, files, recorded audio, and reminders to any items. You can even view and manage your device's native ca

Amazon is losing the battle against fake reviews

Image
T here is a problem of fake reviews on Amazon. You do not need to be a cyberspace guru or security specialist to even notice this problem. Just go Amazon and look through products of not very well known or unknown brands and you will see here and there weird pattern. Some products may have 50 reviews with half of them being  5-star reviews posted in a row in a few days. " Amazon's problem with fake reviews shows no signs of abating, with an investigation by the Which? consumer group revealing a flood of fake five-star reviews for tech products. 'Unknown' brands of headphones, dashcams, fitness trackers and smart watches are receiving thousands of reviews; as they're unverified, there's no evidence that the reviewer has even bought or used the product. These brands include  ITSHINY, Vogek and Aitalk. When Which? searched for headphones, all the products on the first page of results were from unknown brands and almost nine in 10 of more than 12,000 review

Open Source Organizing Tools for Businesses

Image
The only thing which is keeping people and businesses staying with Windows is software. Most of the mature consumer and business software are offered for Windows. So what Linux and Open source can offer businesses if they move to Linux? Most of the major Linux distributions offer project management and organizing tools. The applications in this category include  Planner,   GanttProject and  TaskJuggler  OpenProj  dotProject ProjectLibre Project management applications for Linux offer an overlapping range of features and user interfaces. Project Management software for Linux, much like Time-tracking, Task Management and To-Do List software for Linux, is increasingly overshadowed by cloud services. That is one reason open source applications available for the Linux platform lack many new non-cloud contenders. Read more at Linuxinsider
