WireGuard released for iOS - TestFlight

Image
WireGuard development team announced TestFlight of WireGuard for Apple iOS. This now makes WireGuard available for Linux (currently via DKMS), macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS. For most Linux distributions there are third-party packages available for WireGuard until the mainline support is squared away. WireGuard® is an extremely simple yet fast and modern VPN that utilizes state-of-the-art cryptography . It aims to be faster , simpler , leaner, and more useful than IPSec, while avoiding the massive headache. It intends to be considerably more performant than OpenVPN. WireGuard is designed as a general purpose VPN for running on embedded interfaces and super computers alike, fit for many different circumstances. Initially released for the Linux kernel, it is now cross-platform and widely deployable. It is currently under heavy development, but already it might be regarded as the most secure, easiest to use, and simplest VPN solution in the industry. - from WireGuard.com read m

ReactOS 0.4.10 Released - Open Source Windows Alternative

Image
This OS is Open Source attempt to make Windows alternative which will be fully compatible with all Windows applications binaries. This OS is based on the Windows NT architecture. " It would be perhaps important to start by saying what ReactOS -isn't-. It is not another wrapper built on Linux, like WINE. It does not attempt or plan to compete with WINE; in fact, the user-mode part of ReactOS is almost entirely WINE-based and our two teams have cooperated closely in the past. ReactOS is also not "yet another OS". It does not attempt to be a third player, like SkyOS or any other alternative OS out there. People are not meant to uninstall Linux and use ReactOS instead; ReactOS is a replacement for Windows users who want a Windows replacement that behaves just like Windows. " - from ReactOS Wiki 11.06.2018  The ReactOS project is pleased to announce the release of version 0.4.10, the latest of our quarterly cadence of releases. The project has seen an increas

Amazon EKS, Azure Kubernetes, and Google Kubernetes Cloud Services Compared

Image
The open-source project created by Google, and now shepherded by the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation), has won the war for container orchestration dominance. Kubernetes (pronounced koo-ber-NET-eez, from the Greek word for “helmsman” or “pilot”) is the most rapidly adopted open-source project in history since its release in mid-2014. According to 451 Research , it has already moved into more than 70 percent of organizations using the wildly popular software called containers, which Kubernetes manages. Containers make it simple to encapsulate applications in a form that’s easy to run on any computing environment in companies’ data centers or in public clouds. By some estimates, enterprise adoption rate of Kubernetes will reach 90 percent by next year. But that doesn’t mean that all of the Kubernetes offerings are the same—or equal. In this article, we’ll break down the key components of managed Kubernetes, and explore how each of the three major cloud providers—

Vulnerability in Intel CPUs that Could Allow an Attacker To Read Sensitive Encrypted Data

Image
A team of security researchers has discovered another serious side-channel vulnerability in Intel CPUs that could allow an attacker to sniff out sensitive protected data, like passwords and cryptographic keys, from other processes running in the same CPU core with simultaneous multi-threading feature enabled. The vulnerability, codenamed PortSmash (CVE-2018-5407), has joined the list of other dangerous side-channel vulnerabilities discovered in the past year, including Meltdown and Spectre , TLBleed , and Foreshadow . Discovered by a team of security researchers from the Tampere University of Technology in Finland and Technical University of Havana, Cuba, the new side-channel vulnerability resides in Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, the company's implementation of Simultaneous MultiThreading (SMT). October Windows 10 Update Introduced Important Feature - Windows will Pause updates when PC is in use. Did you notice ?

Image
October Windows 10 Update probably already made it to your PC, if not then there is something you may want to know and may be turn updates on, if you succeeded in disabling them, frustrated by your PC crawling as turtle when updates are installed.   The update includes a number of new features that improve Windows 10 whether you’re using it for work, gaming, or a mixture of the two. One of the more frustrating aspects of Windows 10 is the operating system’s ability to start installing updates when you’re in the middle of using it. While Microsoft has tried to address this aggressive approach to updates with features to snooze installation , Windows 10 users continue to complain that updates reboot devices when they’re in use. Microsoft is finally using machine learning to stop future updates from installing when you’re using your PC . That feature alone makes it worth getting this latest Windows 10 update today, but I’ve been testing the Windows 10 October 2018 Update recen

Best Antivirus for your Windows Desktop

Image
Windows 10 came with Microsoft's  own Antivirus, previously known as Microsoft Security Essentials,  built in. When it was separate package and was free to download, nobody cared and users where using Antiviruses produced by other companies, thinking that McAfee or Kaspersky will do the job better. I personaly stopped using antiviruses on Windows long ago. As a more advanced user i know very well what and when is no-no to do in Windows  and how to tighten Windows security before going online. But most users are not geeks and dont even have time to pay much attention to technical details and procedures. This fact combined with exceptionaly unsecure nature of Windows (any of them -  XP, 7, 10) makes a serious point in getting fresh and updated Antivirus suit, preferably respectfull and not acting like virus and not spying on you. LibreOffice on Windows vs on Linux, Some Thoughts

Image
Many businesses are trying to save money and use Open Source software in their offices. LibreOffice is an Open Source alternative to MS Office. And when you come across a review of LibreOffice, you find yourself stuck with someones personal opinion, whether it is a guru journalist of respectful magazine. Lets take this one from Trustradius.com, made by business professional using LibreOffice in their office. Here are some of her bottom line points: pros It runs very well on a lot of laptops and computers, even if they're old. It has a very good document editor very similar to Microsoft Word. It's open source and free. It does not consume a lot of resources of your computer. It's very fast and reliable. cons The compatibility when switching the file format could be a little bit better. Sometimes it crashes and you lose all your data. It's a good alternative to Microsoft Office but it's not quite the same. We miss some features and tools. As a

Dot-com web adrresses prices to go up

Image
The Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced yesterday that it had extended [PDF] Verisign's contract to run the ubiquitous internet registry until 2024 and had decided to lift a price freeze imposed by the Obama Administration. That means that in December 2020 – and for each of the next four years until the contract expires in 2024 – Verisign will be able to increase the price of dot-coms domains by 7 per cent. Given the enormous value built up behind most dot-coms, Verisign will almost certainly take the opportunity to increase its price each time (it certainly has every other previous time it has been allowed to raise prices). That means that likely dot-com prices looking forward will be: 2019: $7.85 2020: $7.85 2021: $8.40 2022: $8.99 2023: $9.62 2024: $10.29  Read more  And BTW if you are concerned by this move of Trump administration then visit  StopThePriceIncreaseOf.COM and vote.

Vintage computing - Old Operating System and Software on Top of Ancient and Slow Hardware?

Image
Old Operating System and Software on Top of Ancient and Slow Hardware? - Not quite that. When we say vintage we mostly assume it is charming in some special way and then usable also. You was a kid and saw your dad or grandpa  using it. Or we wanted this particular thing in the past but couldn't afford it and now you find it on Ebay and think again. The world of Vintage Computing emerged almost unnoticed . May be because PCs and Laptops and their influence on us and connection with us had to go through some evolution. But here we are. People are buying Vintage Laptops. My friend told me his story. One day last year he saw IBM ThinkPad 600 on Ebay. It was in good cosmetic condition, but was listed "for parts or  not working" due to not booting, giving errors. This classic IBM laptop was expensive business grade engineering masterpiece 20 years ago. Build as a tank, with gorgeous and best among laptops keyboard. With hinges sturdy no matter how long you was using it.

System76 Debuts Thelio - 'Open Hardware' Linux PC

Image
Never heard of Colorado-based System76 ? Think of the company as the Linux alternative to boutique PC builders like Digital Storm , Maingear or Falcon Northwest . System76 specializes in preloading laptops, desktops and mini PCs with a Linux operating system, either Ubuntu or its own Pop!_OS distribution . But today marks a dramatic turning point for the company. Where before it traditionally customized systems inside a mass-produced chassis, the new Thelio PCs are a leap forward in originality, built from the ground up with an "open hardware" approach. Before we get into the tech specs and the open hardware philosophy, it must be said Thelio looks like a stunner. It's handcrafted with black aluminum and real maple and walnut wood, and some very meaningful attention to detail has been applied on the rear exhaust grill: it displays the planetary alignment of the Solar System at the UNIX Epoch. The side paneling features etched mountain ridges inspired by the company

Two Open Source Mobile App Development Frameworks To Make Mobile Dev Easier

Image
To get started creating the greatest mobile app on the planet, you need to get the right tools. One such tool is a framework. In programming terms, a framework is an abstraction in which common code (that provides a generic or general functionality) can be used and rewritten to provide a specific functionality. Say you need Function X for your app, but you don’t want to write all the necessary code for that function. You can use a framework that offers Function X and modify that function so it perfectly fits your needs. In other words, a framework is a way to make development easier and more efficient . Are there open source frameworks available for mobile development? There are two Open Source tools available for this particular task Ionic and PhoneGap Read review of both platforms at Linux.com

10 Most In-Demand Programming Languages of 2018

Image
With the arrival of a new year, software developers face a rapidly changing landscape. Platforms and business needs are evolving while programming languages are either gaining or falling in popularity.  Developers looking to keep their careers on track should acquire new skills, brush up abilities in areas they've long neglected, and reluctantly bid farewell to favorite tools that are rapidly losing their luster. Coding boot camp operator Coding Dojo recently analyzed data collected by job website  Indeed.com , covering 25 programming languages, stacks, and frameworks, in an effort to determine which will likely be the seven most in-demand coding languages of 2018, as well as three up-and-comers. Hackers got access to 81,000 private Facebook conversations using third-party browser extensions to monitor communication between users

Image
Private Facebook conversations of some 81,000 users were posted after hackers used third-party browser extensions to monitor communication between users, according to a new report. While this might sound reminiscent of the recent Facebook hack that compromised the personal data of some 30 million users that also happened last month, this attack is different than – and completely unrelated to – that previous attack.
